Visually impaired individuals face significant challenges in understanding their surroundings and accessing visual information independently. Vision plays a critical role in everyday tasks such as identifying objects, recognizing people, reading signs, and navigating environments. Without reliable access to visual information, these tasks become difficult, often requiring assistance from others and reducing independence and confidence.
According to the World Health Organization, over 2.2 billion people worldwide experience vision impairment or blindness. A large proportion of these individuals encounter daily barriers in mobility, education, employment, and social interaction due to limited access to real-time environmental information.
Existing assistive technologies attempt to address this issue, but many solutions have limitations. Some rely heavily on smartphones and require navigating complex interfaces, which may not be intuitive for all users. Others provide only partial functionality, such as text reading or object detection, without offering a comprehensive understanding of the surrounding environment. Additionally, many solutions lack real-time responsiveness or conversational interaction, making them less effective in dynamic, real-world situations.
There is a clear need for an accessible, real-time system that can interpret and describe surroundings in a natural and intuitive way. Such a system should allow users to interact through voice, receive clear spoken feedback, and operate independently without requiring complex setup or constant external assistance.
This project addresses that gap by combining artificial intelligence, computer vision, and speech technologies into a single integrated system that enables visually impaired users to better understand and interact with their environment in real time.
